It is my pleasure to be the principal of H.H. Dow High School. We are an outstanding public high school that services 1,292 students in grades 9-12. We are widely recognized for our academic rigor and our excellent student achievement is proof. Our curriculum has options for students at all levels and has a track record of college success. Our co and extra-curricular activities help to define H.H. Dow High School as a truly exemplary school.

Anyone planning on playing football for Dow High should plan on attending a short meeting after 6th hour today.  We will plan on meeting in the GOLD GYM.  This is a change in location from an earlier announcement.

If you have a 7th hour please see Coach Watkins after 7th hour.  If you have another conflict, stop by Coach Watkins room on Thursday before school.

Girls Soccer

The Girl’s Varsity Soccer team defeated last year’s Division 3 State Runner-Up Freeland last night 2-0. Goals came from Elizabeth Green and Paige Messick. District play begins for the Chargers on Tuesday at home vs Bay City Western at 5:00!

Furthermore, the inducted members’ turn-in date for Marking Period 4 hours is Friday, June 1.  Those who just joined NHS this spring do not need to turn in anything.  Also, there is NO June meeting.”

We will be having our first whole Council meeting on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:00 am in room 308 (Ms. Outinen´s room). It is crucial that you attend to start the new council year on a positive note! See you there!

 

Softball

 

In the first match against Midland High, the JV softball team won 16 to 4. Leading hitters for the game were Evelyn Pressnall going 3 for 4 with two triples, Sydney Yost going 3-4  and Maddie Miller going 2-3.

In the second game, Dow won 22-3. Leading hitters were Katelyn Murray going 4-4 with two RBIs and Catie Hodgins with two RBIs. Winner pitcher for both games was Sydney Johnson.

Attention chargers! It’s pre-zza time once again! Remember that pre-zza is pre-ordered pizza that is delivered to your third hour. Place your orders and pay before May 16th to be able to enjoy pizza on Thursday, May 17th. Since it is the senior’s last week, seniors will come first on pizza orders. National Honor Society members:  our final meeting of the year will be this Thursday, May 10th, in the Little Theater, both before and after school.  The morning meeting will begin PROMPTLY at 7:05 AM, and the afternoon session at 2:35 PM. Please come to meet the new officers, receive some information about summer hours, and to learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities.  Newly invited probationary members, you are welcome to attend!!

Any senior who attended Adams Elementary – the walk through, with graduation cap and gown, is scheduled for Monday, May 21 at 11:00am. Don’t forget to wear your cap and gown!

 

 

Woodcrest Elementary Seniors

 

Calling all former Woodcrest wolverines and Cook cougars. The senior walkthrough has been scheduled for Monday May 21st at 11:00 am. We will meet in the Woodcrest front office. Please wear your cap and gown. Contact Maddie Reed if you have any questions!

 

 

 

Hey Chargers! Have you ever wanted to relieve some stress and support a good cause? Then we have the perfect solution for you. A Dodgeball tournament! June 9th 2018 at Dow High! It’s simple you get to relieve stress, eat pizza, throw balls at teachers, teachers throw balls at your students, and support a greater cause that hits close to Dow High. 200 cases of MS are diagnosed each week in the US  and more than 15,000 are in Michigan alone. Our own Ms. Pancost, and Sydney’s mom, both have MS; let’s ban together and show support for them and everyone else affected by the disease. So grab a group of 5 and all of you bring $2 for a total of $10 and contact Sydney Gardner and Hannah Kempl. Half of the fee will go towards food, the other half will go towards the National MS Society and all donations are welcome. There’s a table everyday at both lunches. Sign up today while spots are available!

The seniors’ last day is next Friday! Every day this week, Key Club is selling Hershey’s kisses at both lunches to send to seniors on Thursday, May 17th. Send a bundle of kisses and a note for just $1 and show your appreciation for your favorite seniors before they graduate.

Chargers – Did you forget to order your 2018 yearbook? Well you are in luck! We are going to open up a last chance ordering window for those that want to make sure they have a 50th anniversary book. Order forms are available outside room 218 and payments must be made in school, as the online ordering is no longer available. This last chance sale will begin on Monday, May 7 and end on Friday May 11. Distribution day will be Thursday, May 17 at 2:25 in the cafeteria. Any remaining books will be sold for $65 while supplies last.

Car Show

 

The Dow High Car Show will be Tuesday May 15th during both lunches. All makes and models are welcome. Please see Mr Ransom in room 368 for applications. Applications are due in rm 368 by the end of the day Monday and can be slid under the classroom door if locked. A mandatory meeting will also be held in room 368 at 10:30 for all participants.

 

 

Chess Club

 

Attention all students! Dow High’s Chess Club will meet Tuesday, from 3:30-4:30 in room 324 (which is Mr. Evans’ room). Come and join our Chess club for some competitive Chess. No previous Chess knowledge is required, so bring a CHESS MATE and learn how to CHECKMATE!

Varsity Soccer

 

The Girl’s Varsity Soccer team defeated Lapeer 2-0 yesterday. Both goals came in the second half from Sarah Ismail. The Chargers are back in action today at home against Alma at 5:00.

 

Chemistry Club

 

“Attention Chemistry Club members: our next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 16th, after 6th and 7th hours in Ms. Loris’ room, 129b. We will be doing tie-dye so please bring a prewashed T-shirt or anything else you would like to tie-dye for some fluorine, uranium, nitrogen!”

There is a list of seniors that have not told the Update staff their plans for next year for our after graduation spread. WE NEED EVERY SENIORS PLAN. If you did not complete the senior survey or have not communicated your plans to an update staffer please do so immediately or your name will not appear in our senior issue. If you are not sure if we have your information the list of students that we are missing is posted outside of room 218. Please help us have a completed list by the end of the day. Thank you!

 

Cheer workouts will be cancelled for today. We will start workouts back up next Tuesday.

Staff Basketball

IT’s BACKKK! The senior staff basketball game. Seniors, if you are interested in participating you must sign up in the main office. Slots are limited so sign up today. Staff if you are interested in participating please email Madelynne Reed ASAP.

 

Attention all chargers! The freshman student council is hosting a field day! If you are interested in signing up, you will need to sign up with a team of 4 people. You have until MAY 22nd, and we are only accepting the first the 24 teams! The people in the 24 teams that sign up will automatically be entered in a raffle! Sign ups will be sent via email.

 

 

Track Announcements

 

The Dow High Track & Field team continues to put up solid performances with numerous personal bests; however, both the Boys and Girls teams lost to a strong Davison team yesterday.

 

The boys were lead by Garrett Daniels with wins in the high jump and both hurdle races, Chase Perry in both the 100 M and 200 M, Josiah Burr in the 3200 M and the 4 x 800 relay team of Joshua Burr, Josiah Burr, Nick Bloom and Wyatt Adams.  Also scoring for Dow were Jordan Plewa, Robert Lahmann, Andrew Selle, Nate Rhee, Evan Metiva, Junior Galvin, and Jacob Hansen.

 

The girls had first place finishes by Adaeze Okoro in the 100 M, Roxy Muck in high jump, Megan Churm in the 3200 M, and the 4 x 800 M team of Isabella Rhee, Maitea Cox, Megan Churm, and Heleyna Tucker.  Also scoring for the girls were Kara Coltson, Maya Stephenson, Shae Rogers, and Zoie Hall.

 

JV Softball

 

The JV softball team took two wins from Heritage last night.  In the first game the Chargers dominated with their error-less defense and aggressive bats.  Sydney Yost, Katelyn Murray, Evelyn Pressnell and Sydney Johnson all went 2-4.  The final score was 19-3.

In the second game, the chargers fought back from an early lead by Heritage.  Doubles were hit by Sydney Yost, Evelyn Pressnell, Isabel Jankowsky and Alexis Krawzcak. Winner pitchers for both games were Sydney Johnson and Catie Hodgins.

Project 111 is having an end of the year party:

 

SENIORS!  Project 111 and Tri-City Motor Speedway are teaming up for Safe Driving Night at the track next Friday, May 11th!  EACH SENIOR IS RECEIVING A FREE TICKET FOR THEM AND ONE ADULT.  The grandstands open at 5:30.  Action begins at 6:45. Racing begins at 7:55. Two $100 gas cards will be given away!  Join us for a fun evening with Tri-City Motor Speedway!

Attention chargers! The results of the coin drive are in! The freshmen took first place, juniors took second place, and seniors and sophomores took third and fourth place. Thank you to everyone who donated, and a special thank you to a staff member who gave a generous donation.

The tennis team won the 6 team Holly tournament this weekend, which included Northville, the number 2 team in the state.  Taking first for the Chargers were Sarah Ismail, Hadley Camp, Christina VanderKelen, Emily Telgenhoff, Amelie Kraef, and Reema Patel.
